James Lord Pierpont wrote the number as 'The One-Horse Open Sleigh' in order to cheer up the local Sunday-school evening. Will Lyle was a banjo player and made history on 30th October 1889 by recording the very first Christmas record, his instrumental version of 'Jingle Bells.' Sadly, no copy of his recording survives.
